The Classic Ring And Spring by Magic Ian

How would you like a routine that challenges, frustrates and confuses your participants but entertains as well. Puzzles used at the right times can do all of those things but yet still make you look like a master magician. Puzzles and optical illusions have popped on and off the magic scene for eons but the difficulty lays in the struggle to create entertaining premises for their use.

This past September I reviewed Dream Journal by Rick Lax in which he came up with a clever premise for the use of the Magic Spiral Wire Illusion. This month we’ll take a look at another wire type of effect called The Ring And Spring Puzzle. The effect basically is that there is a coiled spring on which a ring ostensibly locked on it. The participant(s) cannot see a way to take it off. But yet the magician’s melts the ring right off onto his waiting hands. Magic Ian has created an entire routine called The Classic Ring And Spring. The DVD is only $10 and comes with two sets of springs. This is the most extensive treatise on performing with the ring and spring I have found.

Although the quality of the production is not what we’re used to seeing these days, all the moves and performances are thoroughly covered. There are no less than six ways taught to perform this effect including a routine with two participants.
